Marrakech is a city rich with culture and sites but also sits in the Atlas mountains and is a perfect base for exploring the deserts and valleys nearby. Here are our favourite day trips from Marrakech.
Once you’ve experienced the sites and sounds of Marrakech you’ll probably want to see more of what amazing Morocco has to offer, and due to it’s location in proximity to the Atlas mountains and the Draa and Ourika Valleys, it’s the perfect base from which to explore Morocco’s nature and villages. You can take day trips into national parks, the desert and more – all within easy reach. Here are our tips of the best day trips from Marrakech.
Ourika Valley, Oukaimeden Valley and Asni Valley
With scenic waterfalls and beautiful landscapes, the Ourika Valley is a popular option for a day trip from Marrakech due to its proximity and lush green landscape. It’s only 30 kms away but offers an insight into the life of Morocco’s traditional Berber people and the beautiful landscapes of the Atlas Mountain’s. The Oukaimeden Vally is dotted with traditional villages and the Asni Valley has almond orchards full of blossom in spring. From here it’s possible to visit Takerkoust Lake and the Kik Plateau but you will need a full day trip to fit it all in!
What could be more refreshing than escaping the city and seeing the beautiful Ouzoud waterfalls, set in this lush oasis? See these natural falls plunge 110 meters down the cliffs of the Atlas mountains and visit the cool caves surrounding them. A great place to explore the natural beauty of Ouzoud and to have a picnic – just be careful not to attract macaque monkeys!
This Roman port and harbor market has a seaside charm as a popular destination for kite and windsurfing. For those not into beach sports you can take a camel ride along the beach here. There is also the traditional medina and souks that specialise in the local enamel and carpets in the citadel and many great cafes with local food. It’s around 110kms from Marrakech so not far for a day trip from Marrakech, and a city with a completely different vibe.
Ait BenHaddou and Ouarzazate
A hill top kasbah and Saharan Desert movie studio await you on this exciting and beautiful trip. Passing palm groves and desert landscape, take a drive through the Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass to UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou. This outstanding ‘kasbah’ (walled town) is in the middle of mountain canyons and rich in history, little changed since the 17th century. From here you can travel to Taourirt Kasbah, where ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ was filmed, and Ouarzazate at the edge of the Sahara desert. This is a full day away from Marrakech so you’ll need to make the most of it!
