GIS Data

We have compiled the useful GIS layers from the ICC website that cover the El Raval area of Barcelona. The zipped file is available here. You must UNZIP this file before attempting to access the data. Once the file is uncomressed to your hard drive, find the elRaval.mxd file and double click it to launch ArcMap.

Catalonia Maps

ICC, Cartographic Institute of Catalonia, is the producer of the large scale topographic and orthophoto maps of the Barcelona region now in the Library's map collection. The Mapserver link will lead you to some online mapping previews of the print materials they sell. There are also topographic maps, base municipal maps, DTM maps and Coordinate caps data for downloading.

IDEC: Catalonia Spatial Data Catalog provides saptial data, online maps of Catalonia. Text is in Catalan, Spanish and English. Click the button of English flag in the corner for English reading.

Barcelona Maps in the UVA Library

The physical maps listed below are on reserve in the Fine Arts Library for the semester. In addition, most of the maps have been scanned for this studio. They are available as 250 dpi jpegs on cdrom in the Fine Arts Library and the Scholars' Lab. Instructions for working with the scanned images are located with the cds. You will need to use the map index to locate the appropriate map number. When you read the disk in a PC, a copyright notice will display. To access the images, right-click on the cd icon, and choose "Explore." (On Macs, you will only see the folders and documents on the cd; please read the copyright notice.) Inside the folder for the series on the cd, there will be a text file containing an index for the images. The barcode on the physical map serves as the filename for the image on the cdroms.

Please note: These maps are copyright protected. The cds may NOT be copied in their entirety or removed from the library. Limited individual files from a disk may be copied for educational purposes only for use in the Barcelona Seminar. No files may be reproduced for use other than in that seminar. No files may be sold or otherwise distributed.

Large Scale Maps

The following are large scale maps produced by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional, Catalan. All maps date from the 1990s.

Significant portions of the city have not been mapped at this scale yet. Mostly monochromatic, showing detailed contours and building footprints. Text is in Catalonian.

SCALE: 1:5,000: Topographic map of Catalonia (Mapa topogràfic de Catalunya 1:5 000). Produced by Instituto Geográfico Nacional, Catalan. Approximately 40 sheets, covering only the Barcelona area. Colorful maps, depicting the orography, hydrography, population nuclei, communications network and other elements of the territory. Text is in Catalonian.

SCALE: 1:5,000: Orthophotomap of Catalonia (Ortofotomapa de Catalunya 1:5 000). Produced by Instituto Geográfico Nacional, Catalan. Approximately 40 sheets, covering only the Barcelona area. Black and white photographs form the base of these maps, with signficant labeling for sites, roads, geodetic survey markers, etc. Text is in Catalonian.

Digital images

The University Library's Digital Image Collection contains over 800 images of Barcelona, many of them buildings and other points of architectural interest. Images can be browsed, searched, collected or downloaded.

City Guides

Official City Site of Barcelona (L'Ajuntament de Barcelona) - Comprehensive web site for visitors and citizens, produced by the municiple government of Barcelona. Includes information about environment, government, services, and tourism. Specific sections on urban planning, demographic statistics, and information by city district are included. Note: Once inside the site, many pages are only available in Spanish or Catalonian. Does not work well in Firefox.

Barcelona Public Transportation Site (Pàgina Oficial del Transport Públic de Barcelona: Bus i Metro) - Guide to Bus and Metro services, including timetables and maps. Text in English and Catalonian. Slow response time.

Home Page de Turisme de Barcelona A visitor's guide sponsored by the Barcelona tourism office. Text is in English, Catalonian, Spanish, and French.

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals provides access to journal articles from all over the world on architecture, design, city planning, and historic preservation.

Llibret Gardunya is a planning document about the proposal to give a new facade to the boqueria and to redesign the Plaza de la Gardunya. It includes several historic maps of the area that show the evolution of the urban courtyard morphology.
