A Romantic Weekend in Lisbon

Portugal’s capital is a great destination for a romantic getaway, with great sunset vistas, delicious food and the charming winding streets. Here’s our tips for how to have a romantic weekend in Lisbon on a budget.

A Romantic Weekend in Lisbon

With amazing panoramic views, the ocean and charming old town, Lisbon is a great place to have a romantic weekend. From the beautifully lit São Jorge Castle to melancholy fado music, there’s romance all around.

Lisbon’s Historical Waterfront
Experience where the 16th century Age of Discovery set sail from on Lisbon’s lovely waterfront at the romantic Tower of Belém, an icon of New World exploration that looks out to sea. The Baixa, or lower part of town, is a great place to stroll through the historical streets of Rua Augusta and the Avernida de Liberdade. Make your way to the Comercio SquareTerreiro do Paço, where the Earthquake of 1755 destroyed the place, but the charm still remains of the old glory on the lovely waterfront.

Museu do Azulejo

A Park with a view
Plenty of people visit Lisbon and only see the old town, but a short hop on the metro or bus takes you to the 1998 World Expo site of the Parque das Naçõesthe Oceanarium and the tile museum – the Museu do Azulejo. From the park you have a great view of Lisbon’s waterfront from the other side, with the iconic Vasco da Gama Bridge shimmering on the water.

Old Town exploration
Wander the neighbourhood of Chiado and enjoy the views of the city, the passing street cars and the old world charm. This is the best place to enjoy the famous pastries in Lisbon, stop by one of the cafes for your Pastel de Nata or enjoy a coffee at the intellectual haunts from the 18th century Cafe Martinho da Arcada or Lisbon’s most famous Brasileira. These are great places to watch the world go by.

Lisbon Miradouros

Sunset Views at the Miradouros

Lisbon’s hilly landscape means there are plenty of great view points to enjoy the view of the sun setting over the sea. What could be more romantic? There will also be plenty of other people enjoying this view in the Barrio Alto so try the Mirador de San Pedro de Alcantara and the Portas do Sol below the castle in Alfama for a more seductive location.

Wine Tasting
Lisbon is full of cosy wine bars in the Barrio Alto, and happily has great wine too. Try one of these candle lit bars for a wine tasting experience, accompanied by delicious tapas, or ‘petiscos’. We recommend the famous BA Wine Bar, The Corkscrew and Artis Wine Bar – all perfect for sampling local wines. If you’re all the way at the top by the castle, try Wine Bar do Castelo, from here it’s a short walk down to catch some Fado.

Parque das Nações

A Romantic Evening of Fado
This soulful music will give a shiver down your spine, as the traditional live performances feature melancholy love songs, belted out with some passion from the singers. The best place to catch a performance of these love songs is the neighbourhood of Alfama, an old medieval neighbourhood below the castle. This area is full of touristy performances, and not the best place to eat either (watch out for cover charges) but has the famous O Faia or Cafe Luso. For a more local experience try  Senhor Fado

A Romantic Dinner with a view

There are plenty of blissful views of Lisbon but having one with your dinner is the icing on the romance cake. The cuisine in Lisbon lends itself to great fish restaurants, our favourite for a unique experience, delicious local food and a panoramic view is Chapito, the performance school and restaurant.

Take a Day Trip to Sintra
Only a 30 minute train ride from Lisbon’s Rossio station, the whimsical fairy tale town of Sintra is a worthy romantic day trip from Lisbon. Take a day to enjoy the Monserrate Palace, Botanical Gardens and the castle. Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and well deserved as the castle, palaces and landscaped gardens perch on the hill top. Explore the rising cobbled streets of the town and climb past the boutiques, shops and restaurants on your way to the peak. There are also plenty of Ginja and wine tasting places here too. For lunch try the beautiful setting of Saudade or Tacho Real at the top of the hill for a break from sight seeing.

Port and Ginja Tasting
With its proximity to famous Porto, no trip to the region is complete without some port tasting with your partner. There are lots of simple options in the bars and cafes around where you can sample your Ruby or Tawny by the glass. Most popular with the locals is Ginja – the cherry liquor made in nearby Obidos. It’s sweet but also accompanied by dark chocolate, traditionally drunk from a dark chocolate cup! You can see the locals clustering around Ginja bars in the evening, make sure you don’t miss out on trying some yourself!
